My fellow homeschooling mommy friend approached me to help her with a cake for her dear sister's wedding. She wanted me to help her re-create the scene on the invitation card and the cake also had to reflect a happy picnic-ky atmosphere.
Here's the card:
My dear hubby was tasked with doing the tree, which I envisioned to be in copper wire.
Yup, he took some cables and stripped them. :)
The tree in it's first stages of "growth". :)
I thought it'd be so cute to throw in some little dangling hearts for leaves. Here's the final piece, the topper figurines made in Sculpey, custom made to match the card and the bride's wedding dress! It comes with a wooden base so that after the cake is served, the toppers can be kept as a momento of their wedding day.
The colours don't show up so well in this indoors picture but at the venue, it looked much better. :)
There! Happy picnic-ky! :) I'm so happy! :D
Don't you love the little fondant sunflowers? My little elves helped me with those. All the brown centres were scored with lines to look like the centre of the actual sunflower. :)
My friend HL (right) taking a closer look at the details of the cake. :) Me, on the left, figuring where to place the little picnic basket. Finally decided to place it near the wire bicycle (that was the only thing that was not hand made by us.)
okok, for those of you wondering, isn't it quite ickky to stick copper wire into a cake that is to be eaten?
Actually, the tree was planted within a drinking straw and for the figurines, I used the thinner Yakult straws. :) So the straws are in contact with the cake, not the wires. The top of the cake was covered with a layer of cling wrap too so that the wires of the copper tree and the Sculpey do not touch the cake.
It's all quite invisible so it looks like everything is holding up by themselves, but a lot of thought has gone into the "engineering" and food saftey of the cake. :)
There's the cake in the air-conditioned glass pavilion at Sentosa Amara Sanctuary. On the reception table sits the bride's handy work sewing (so sweet and pretty!) and the original picnic basket, and a very lovely flower arrangement (I like!)
Husband and wife team. <3 I'm thankful to God for a husband who is so helpful and supportive of my cakey projects. What started off as my little hobby has become our team effort!
We're thinking of making some A Piece of Cake t-shirts so that when we do deliveries, we look more cake designer-ish. lol!
Thanks for reading! :) More pics to come of the bride and groom.....

I love the cake, it looks absolutely amazing, I especially like the little yellow flowers which are scattered all over the cake.

I really love the little sunflowers and of course the beautiful spiraling tree of life. What better imagery for a marrying couple than sunflowers (happiness) and a tree (life and growth)?

Love this cake and the topper!!! I know it was a lot of work, but the simplicity of the design is what makes it so beautiful.
