Our custom made cakes are developing a style of their own. Highly one of its kind, everything made from ingenuity, skill and from scratch. Incorporating cake, Sculpey and workshop customizations. Do we sound like real pros? Haha.. no, we're just a homemaker, OT (Carol, back in action, yay!) and school teacher (hubby Dan). ;) I feel really blessed, though, God couldn't have put together a better team in us for us. 20 nov 2011 was the latest cake, for our church brethren, Zi Yang and Tansy. Such a sweet story, they met playing basketball, so of course we had to do something bball related.
But I wanted to add an element of a biblical christian concept of marriage in this cake. You see, the Bible's prescription for marriage is for the wife to act as a helper to her husband, to help him be the best that God intends for him to be. And in doing so, the wife finds fulfilment in her life as well. We see many bible examples, starting with Adam and Eve and right to Christ and His Bride, the Church.
Yes, understandably, this does not sit well with modern society whereby the wife is entitled to pursue her own dreams and goals and the husband needs to follow her and give her that space or, basically, get a life of his own.
Theology aside, we decided to depict this by having the Bride (as if coming straight from their wedding ceremony to the basketball court, changing their shoes and getting into a game) throwing the lay up shot to the Groom who dunks it successfully into the hoop. The idea sounded easy enough.
Haha, yes the court is not done to size. But that'll be either an even huge-r more ginormous cake than it already was (I think in the end, it came up to 24" by 14"..) or we'd have simply teeny tiny Bride and Groom figurines.
You have no idea how much planning and discussion went into this part of the cake, how to make the Groom fly in the air, dunk the ball without the whole thing (hoop post and Groom) crashing into the court cake. They made it look easy I tell you.

How not to have one of those half torso-ed bald figurine pics? The figurines were painstakingly handmade by Carol. She's da best!
The Bride and Groom were to have brought their duffle bag with towels and water bottles along. These were the periphery Sculpey stuff I made.:)
The Nike shoes I made. Took me 3 hours to do this. Tedious but strangely fun. lol
(btw, the wedding colours were blue and purple.)

For the first time, hubby got in on the action with the fondant work because I'm not in physical shape to do all that labourious kind of work of kneading, being in my first trimester. Here he is doing the basketball court.
You know those new fangled basketball courts with the different colours... well, we are trying to do that. This is a huge cake. (By my humble stadards... :p) 24" by 14"'
And I really do love the goal boards that my hubby made with acrylic!!!
They gave the cake a really clean and bright look, somehow. :) The hoop was sawed and filed PVC pipe. Guess what the net was made of?

Praise God for a new family of faith being formed!
The vanilla sables cookies were delicious! They had a lovely buttery taste and they weren't rock hard like some sugar cookies are. I baked them with a lolly stick inserted in the middle. Couldn't help but sample some even before decorating.... heehee
