A Piece Of Cake

Under the Sea Wedding Cake!

   I'm currently not taking cake orders. This cake was ordered long before I found out I was pregnant. :O) Just sharing this latest project for viewing. Thanks for viewing!!

 Chee Hoa and Meredith met each other while doing the Marine Engineering Course in Singapore Poly. They wanted their wedding cake to reflect this special time of their lives with a boat of some sort on their wedding cake. 

As such, their cake is based on a children’s Sunday school song which goes:            

            With Christ in the vessel, we can smile at the storm,

                                                As we go sailing home.

Yes, we all do face storms in our lives but with Jesus, Christians are assured of getting through the storms with His help and Guidance! :O)

But I didn't want to depict Jesus so, the boat in which the Bride and Groom topper was carried in was meant to represent Him. :O)

The unusual topper: boat and the Bride and Groom, was made by my partner in crime, Carol. It's Sculpey: a polymer clay that hardens when baked, so it lasts and lasts and serves as a keepsake for the couple years and years after their wedding.

As you can see, the top two tiers, the sea, were tilted cakes and the bottom tier was the sea bed, covered in "sand". (See the Video at the end of this post!)

The sea creatures was made of fondant by me and edible.
I had so much fun making them!

The Jelly Fish. And here you can see the waves of the sea, made of royal icing.

The easy peasy school of fish which kinda look like chicken drumlets or tiny footprints.

I love these two. They look like they are having a conversation.

My favorite has got to be the crabs! I love the eyes I put on the end of toothpicks. :)))

And the topper that made everyone go WOW!!

Handcrafted by Carol out of Sculpey. The figurines are dressed in the actual gown and suit that the couple wore on their big day!

What on Earth is this???

I'm preparing some fondant for a wedding cake I'm doing for this saturday. These, believe it or not, are the beginnings of an underwater scene.

I'm wrapping the coloured fondant in clingwrap to prevent them from drying out before I can shape them into sea creatures and seaweed.

Quite excited about this upcoming cake... it's gonna be a fun one!

Seriously Cookies on a Stick.

December's Wedding Cake!

The deed is done. December's wedding cake was quite a success! It was a simple but elegant cake, predominantly cream coloured, accentuated with gorgeous blood red roses. Oh so romantic!

Taste-wise, I got lots of personal feedback from guests that the carrot cake was moist and very good. So I'm happy that the cake tasted as good as it looked. :O)

The Design Story:

As you know, December's wedding couple met in junior college in their teen years and have been together for 10 years. They wanted that element of Time to be reflected in their wedding cake. She likes pretty and cute. He likes bold and simple. Do you see elements of those on the final cake?

So I thought it would be very special and meaningful to use words to evoke the memories that they shared. I asked them to come up with a list of 50 words which traced their relationship thus far and I would then pipe it onto the cake. (Easier said than done! The piping took me 4 hours! :OP )

The 50 Words:

(I had extra space in at the bottom, which is better than not having enough space, so I piped the first line of their special: until He comes, we'll walk together.)

The couple met in the junior college whose motto is "Nil Sine Labore" which means nothing without labour. When I was piping that at 10 pm (with the prospects of 47 more words to go) I was thinking to myself, Oh yeah, I can agree with that! :OP But it was a labour of love for my church brethren (and my Lord Jesus) so I was happy to see it through.

I had also intended to pipe on their names on the middle tier and paint it burgundy. At 1 am (the day of the wedding), when I was at the point of doing that, I realized piping letters on large was really ugly. :OP

So, I went to my cake book library for a quick search for what kind of remedial action I could possibly do. Then I came up with using the fondant, and a template (fonts chosen from the internet), and then cutting out letter by letter and sticking them on to the cake.

Again, easier said than done! But once you've committed to doing the cake, you really got to see it through. We (husband and I) got to bed at 3 am.

Here I am working on painting a letter with a fine brush and toothpick.

This one is how we "hung it out to dry". We pegged the fondant letters from sliding with needles. Quick thinking! :O)   

 

Tumbling into bed at 3 am but not sleeping soundly because our poor little baby was sick and wheezing and uncomfortable. Got up at 7 am to do the flower arrangement.

These are the blood red roses I got, personally delivered by the couple the day before the wedding. They were really deep deep red and when they bloomed, it was mesmerizing.

As I use a blob of fondant instead of the usual green floral sponge, I need to do the flower arrangements last minute so that the flowers remain fresh for the wedding.

Here's a close up of the final arrangement! The bride wanted a cascade effect so I tried my best. I think it was pretty ok.

There's actually an invisible layer of baking paper which prevents the flowers from touching the cake. Flower pesticide (which can hardly be removed by washing) on cake is a big no-no!

Hamburger Time!

Hello there! After a couple month baking hiatus, I was back in action with a new cake to my repertoire!

I freely admit that this cake was not thought up by me. A photo of a cake was sent to me by a valued would-be customer for me to reproduce. In the end, I didn't manage to do the cake for her but I told her I'd be interested to experiment anyway.

So here it is! Thanks to you, dear reader! :O)

I did this cake for my dear 4 yr old kiddo's birthday cake. Too cool!! It was a hamburger cake! Good enough to fool some folks, eh?  :OP

We enjoyed eating the "beef patty" which we created after much brain storming. And the "ketchup" is strawberry jam!

And this is the happy birthday boy with his cake (and his real hamburger we had for our hamburger party).

Happy birthday, sunshine boy! We love you.

Bestest Baking Buddy, Carol's nifty mini Mii!

Okay, this isn't a "cake" related post per se, but it has to do with the Scupley work that BBB Carol's been making. If you are creative, you can make many things with the very versatile Scupley!

This pic is from an entry on gameaxis.com from RexRetry, who is now in Norway working as the Associate Editor, European Correspondent. This 3" high mini Mii was made by Carol for his going away present.   

He's very impressed by her attention to detail...and who wouldn't be?

Giving an Arm and a Leg

Bestest Baking Buddy, Carol and I have been hard at work on our June wedding Cake.

So early? Yes, we're making the Sculpey figurines that are to go with the cake.

The pieces that we make are so miniscule we're working with toothpicks and needle points. It is tedious and painstaking. People with less love for this kind of thing can loose their sanity. But we enjoy it! Sadistic streak, maybe? :OP

Well, I'm sure you all will be eager to see the final cake! It will be a really fun and special one, to say the least... :OP

But for now, give me a hand and break a leg! (Not!)

Hello! My name is Cuddley Bear!

This is Cuddley Bear, the latest celebration cake in my repertoire.

Cuddley Bear is a 3D sitting bear for all occasions. Cuddley can put on different costumes for different occasions! Even fur colour can change! :O)

Watch for this Friday when Cuddley delights a little 2 year old on her birthday!
