How do we come up with such beautiful and unique looking cakes?
Well, only because our customers are interesting and unique people and we take the time to talk to them to find out more about what makes them tick or what really brightens their day! That's how we do it.
As a result, we've done Swimming Pools, A War Scene, and even a Tetris Wedding Cake! Of course, some folks prefer simply elegant cakes to be the centre-piece of the decor. That's wonderful too!
For sure, at A Piece of Cake, we don't do catalogues or "product codes". No. That is not us at all.
So, if you want to know the mechanisms about how it's done: for specially commissioned cakes, like wedding cakes, we spend some time chatting up with you to find out what you like, what your hobbies are, etc. More specific to the event: what the style of the rest of the decorations are and the colour scheme, perhaps.
Chatting about likes and dislikes sounds easy. But formulating an aesthetically pleasing cake design based on those preferences is the tricky part. We take the time and effort to even research and come up with a design that artistically incorporates the ideas from the interview/ brainstorming process. Sometimes, it's a mish-mash of several ideas. Sometimes, it's one solid theme.
Then, we will do a sketch and description of the design and it is usually emailed to you for feedback. We're always open for feedback. Afterall, it's your special day.
For instance, in this sketch, the wedding couple wanted a very simple but elegant look. So we thought of using the embroidery patterns on the wedding gown for the pattern on the cake. The flowers were to cascade down. White piping work on white fondant.
So the Bride emailed us some pictures of her gown and we took down the pattern. Practiced alittle and then piped it on the wedding cake, free-hand. We added a few blue dots, and silver dragees for some colour but still kept everything simple and elegant.
You might have noticed that in the sketch, the ribbons and flowers were supposed to be pink and the actual cake was blue. Well, that is based on feedback from the couple that they preferred blue.
Well, if you take a look at the wedding cakes album (A Piece of Wedding Cake) on this blog, the descriptions do elaborate on some of the design elements that went into that particular design.
A word from the lovely bride of this particular cake:
"Praise the Lord for your creativity and most of all for yr sincerity for the cake that u made for our wedding, gathering our preferences and likings, checking up on our wedding colour theme to make sure the decorations and colours used for the cake complements the wedding theme, coming up with the sketch illustration of the cake design so that we can have the initial idea of how our cake will look like, looking for the right materials and decorations needed for the cake etc etc.. and every other detail and effort that adds to the making of our beautiful and exquisite wedding cake!
