I have to give God the glory! No. 1 (almost 8 yrs) and No. 2 (almost 6 yrs) have taken their Bronze survival swimming test and passed! I'm so proud of them. And to think that not one year ago, they were so afraid of the water, they didn't dare to submerge their heads in.
No. 3 (almost 4 yrs) didn't take the test yet but he too has also learned not to be afraid of the water and can now fairly comfortably submerge and float in deep water.
This is the pic of them (no. 1 far left and no. 2 third from left) and their cousins getting ready to show the tester that they'd be prepared and survive the very unlikely scenario of their vessel sinking while they were in their PJs.
My girl is a brute force girl. When she was younger, she broke CDs while trying her hardest to yank them out of difficult CD holders. Just before the swimming test, while they were doing some practice jumps, my girl was a little over-enthusiastic, took too big a step and ripped her pants. For those who don't know, a requirement for the Bronze test is that the testee use their pant bottoms as floats by tying the legging ends with knots and then inflating it whilst in deep water.
My girl knew her pant was ripped but didn't dare to tell the tester. So she tried and she tried and she tried to inflate her float. Of course she couldn't. All the other testees by that time had finished and moved on to the next part of the test. Daddy was anxiously watching her struggling from afar. Kor kor (big brother) was in tears because mei mei (little sister) couldn't make the float. All the while, she was close to tears but didn't cry and kept on trying. Till finally the tester found out (i'm not sure how) that the pants were faulty and her cousin passed her pants for mei to make a float... and she proved she could do it!!!
After that, they had to complete a swim of 400m (8 laps of the pool). She was already quite tired but perservered till the end and kor kor swam next to her, taking care of his sister. He made sure she swam closer to the wall because he was afraid she would drown. It was so heart warming.
So besides having learned how to swim, I thank God for Him teaching my children lessons in perserverance, endurance, loyalty and love. Learning to swim was one of the few objectives we set out to achieve this school year, and we can put a check in that box! AMEN!
Praise God!
Amen! Well done, kor kor and mei mei!!!
