From those that I know, I have a couple of readers who are first time parents of young children. I had wanted for a long time to share about how we read to the little ones. And finally, I recorded an instance yesterday morning. :O)
It was an unusually peaceful morning. The children had just woken up from their sleep. Big kor kor (8yrs) asked baby (2 yrs) whether he wanted to read book. And then all of them snuggled together to enjoy the new book we bought about Paul and the shipwreck.
No. 1 isn't a fluent reader yet but he has made much progress this year! That's what I'm rejoicing about, how much he has improved, not where he is compared to others his age. And of course, reading to the little ones gives him a chance to read out loud, and read in an interesting manner to sustain interest.
See also how he engages the young ones in the book. That's how we read to the young ones. Get them to identify, learn names, etc. Lots of praise. Also correction. But always a close, "together" time- reading. Unfortunately, baby wasn't very vocal in that morning. Usually, he'll talk and repeat words. It's very interactive and enjoyable to read to him.
Enjoy!
