I've been reading to the children this wonderful book, three chapters a night. They love it and always ask for more!
The pioneer family's journey from Wisconsin to the great High Prairies of Kansas is told mostly through main character of this book, the little girl, Laura. It is a semi autobiographical book by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
She documents how pioneers travelled in their covered wagons, and at points, the wagons even become boats at river crossings! And how the men will use all of God's bounty to build log houses, stone fireplaces, sheds for the horses. The women folk cook whatever is hunted (plump prairie hen, rabbits, etc), and also lots of sewing and washing. It is heartwarming to note how they tried their best to keep everything neat, tidy and pleasant even in the camp ground, or in their simple log houses.
I've been enjoying reading this book to the children especially because we get to learn so much. Not only the life of these people back then in America, and their pioneering spirit, but also good character like diligence, perserverance, carefulness, attention to detail, enterprise, etc. etc.
The video version is on youtube, I'm pretty sure. But I won't tell the kids just yet. ;)
