(Busy week! No time for "sit down" school! Learning taken from real life! :p)
Monday, one of the homeschooling moms in Singapore took the initiative of running a garage sale with the idea that it would be the kids running the show. What a wonderful learning opportunity!
My kids and I made a list of all the things we wanted to sell. My sister's children (the girl mainly) was interested to sell some stuff too. So we combined to make one stall.
I made no. 1 my main seller. He knew the prices of everything and he was the one who would interact with the customers (who were mostly other homeschoolers...) He was initially very discouraged that no one was buying anything from him. But his cousin's homemade beads jewelery was doing pretty brisk sales! I encouraged him not to give up. Afterall, he was only at it for half an hour. :/
Here he is explaining to this lady about the chinese VCD set we wanted to let go. :)
She bought our guitar-lele (6 stringed ukulele) from us. Her husband gave me feedback that he was impressed that no. 1 did well in negotiating a price. Not haggling but politely.
He came away from that day happy, confident and excited to do more selling! That's great!
In the foreground are the little bead bracelets and earrings my homeschooled niece made. The little girls fell in love with them! And my niece was soooo pleased to be earning money from her hobby.
And in the background was the rest of the garage sale. What I see are lots of loving parents who are creatively and actively finding ways for their children to learn (so many things!) in a safe and guided environment.
I had a chance to go around shopping and talking with the various little sellers. All of them handled me the customer very well! Why do people worry that homeschoolers aren't socialized???
We learn through failures too.
No. 3 was game to try selling his little bird drawings but nobody bought other than his aunt and mommy. :) He was quite sad but we learned from failure to try again or try something else. haha! (Don't you think his drawings are too cute, though? Well. I think so. But I'm probably biased. ;) )
And our baby doll (on the right) found another baby doll to play with... right there on the floor of the function room. :) Soooo cute!!! (Bad haircut by mama.)
I'm half embarrassed to say I brought home more than I brought to the sale. *slaps head*
But how could I resist 2 years worth of Nat Geo mags and Zoo Life and Reader's Digest???? For $6??? I'm so happy!!! hahaha
Homeschooling really offers so much for each homeschooled child. They
are so loved!
I'm proud to be associated with these people!
