It's true, I'm lazy about art n craft lessons. I do not actively teach art or craft in a special art and craft slot. Not that I did not try fixing a slot in the time table over the years. But I never stuck to it. :p Ah well.
But does that mean my children do not do art or craft? Oh no. They LOVE art and craft! They do it themselves. My part is only to provide some tools and materials and praise. lol Oh yah, the Art Attack videos do help too!
you must be kidding.
nope. Honestly, they devise their own projects and drawings and take out the paints or whatever and they do it themselves. The aftermath , though, is amazing. Bits of paper everywhere, paint on the floor, in the sink, on the pillows (coz they mostly work in their bedroom.) But we are refining the process and I'm trying to get them to be more conscious of the mess they need to keep thereafter.
So, my two little boys no. 3 and no. 4 (7 and 5yrs) used to like to play soft toys. Recently, they've moved on to "hard toys".
In particular, they love their horses. They've named every single one. And they like to add wings to them and turn them into Pegasus. Hmmm... did I tell you this before?
My no. 3 wanted to make a house for them and we had quite a few boxes that used to hold the mandrin oranges from Chinese New Year. So he roped in the gang to do some house painting.
This is the acrylic paint I bought at discount from Art Friend.
He had already envisioned that it will be stacked 2 high. The top level is for the King and the Queen.
There's a porch shelter above the doors, if you can't see. :p
But wait there's more! Get this... it opens up!
These display pics were taken by the kids, btw. :) Showing off their group project...haha
It opens also for easy accsibility to their toys. That's his idea. So to add to the paint and brushes and stuff, they also have access to tape (lots and lots of tape) and scisors and penknives.
No. 3 was so happy with what he had achieved beginnning for the conceptualization of the project to finally completing it over two days with the help of his siblings.
He was beaming when said to me, "Mama, I was creative, right? You always tell us you like us to be creative."
Yes, I do! Well done, kids! :) I really LOVE sitting back and seeing their touches of originality and creativity. Every now and then they will surprise me like that.
So, some thoughts:
1) Children need time to play and be creative. Singapore schools (and many parents) would rather eat up all their children's time with lessons, lessons, remedials and more remedials. Making the children dull in their thinking coz they are being told what to think all the time! And it sure stifles the individual's personality.
2) Who says homeschoolers do not have opportunities to work as a group? Or develop social skills?
3) No, we do not need to spend tons of money on extra "enrichment" lessons. Especially in our society, with so many parents who have a lot of money to spend on their one or two children, there's always that fear that if the kids are not going for the latest class, they are missing out. But I need a whole other post to talk (read: rant) about this one. haha
That's no. 4 (left) and no. 3 saying, "so many horses!"
My funny guys.
These two kids are so cute. They even made house for their little ponies and pegasus action figures. They are very creative and their faces really shows enjoyment.
